17 May 2024 - Arrived at Elkhart Campground

This morning in the midst of a Midwest rainstorm that lasted all night, we departed Camp Atterbury and headed northbound towards our next destination - Elkhart IN.  The drive was fairly easy.  Traffic in Indianapolis was heavy but it was likely also rush hour as people headed in to work.  I-65 north and I 465 around Indy to Highway 31.  Our experience with Highway 31 was not good last year.  Sections were so rough they caused trim to fall off our camper.  So I created an elaborate alternate route with eight waypoints to avoid this.  Shortly thereafter we received intel that the issues from last year had been fixed so I decided to give it a go.  Sure enough, all was well on Highway 31 and we motored on into Elkhart without any issues.  Right at four hours travel time and 218 miles travel today.

Just off I-90, through the toll booth, we drove a couple blocks north then back to the east a mile or so and we arrived at the Elkhart Campground.

We have stayed here multiple times before, mostly in conjunction with attending Alliance Rally's, and we have attended all of them - 2020 & 2021 were held at the Elkhart Campground and then we outgrew it and it was moved to the Elkhart County 4H Fairgrounds Campground in Goshen IN for 2022, 2023, and this year 2024.  But even with the rally being moved, we still converged on the Elkhart campground the week before for "pre-rally festivities"!  It is a gathering of Alliance owners but more importantly, it is a gathering of Ally's - friends with a common interest, from all over the USA and Canada.  Since we have become involved with this group we have met friends for life, from every walk of life.  It is amazing.  When we bought our Alliance I had no concept of what this would evolve into.

So here we are, waiting for our other friends to arrive and as we walk about the campground with Liberty, we stop and talk with other Ally's and make new friends every day!  Right now Doreen did a count and she said there were about 21 Alliance coaches here.  This will grow and grow throughout the week until we all head to the Elkhart County 4H Fairgrounds Campground for the 2024 Alliance Rally.  There we will have over 400 Alliance coaches!!  Until then, the party is here!!

Tomorrow morning very early I drive north to Constantine MI and our grandson Lucas Buehner (daughter Jennifer and son-in-law James' son) will travel south from Battle Creek MI where we will board a boat with our guide Derek Weurding and fish the waters above the Constantine MI Dam on the St Joseph River and fish for small mouth bass and bluegills!  We have been looking forward to this for a long time.  Doreen and Liberty will have a "girl's day" while we are gone!
