22 Jun 2024 - Lunch with Iraq War Comrade First Sergeant Tony Campbell and Boat Ride with Kirk Small

Doreen woke up this morning with some serious welts on the back of her neck and behind her ear which we very tender.  The campground office lady advised they were black fly bites and sold Doreen a product to apply.  She also suggested Benadryl, so we grabbed our grocery list and headed to a local store that also sold pharmaceuticals.

On the way back we stopped at Tractor Supply for some canning lids and I also filled the big ol' brown truck with diesel.  $3.999/gal.

This morning we also received a message from a comrade I served with during the Iraq war 2006-2007.  Air Force retired First Sergeant Tony Campbell and I served together at Kirkuk Iraq and have stayed in contact all these years.  Tony was the Logistics Resources Squadron (LRS) First Sergeant and managed the Airmen and advised the Commander of LRS.  Tony was a great leader and motivator and we hit it off right away.  We saw each other in 2016 south of Bangor when Doreen and I traveled through Maine and as we passed Bangor the other day I had to at least give Tony a shout out.  Surprisingly he said they planned to travel to Millinocket this weekend and see us!

Tony's wife Tammie had been to a restaurant that is just up the road from our campground called Knife Edge Brewing, so we met there.  Tony's sister Sabrina and her friend Brian we here visiting from Texas/Louisiana area and so it was great to meet them also.  Knife Edge Brewing has a beautiful facility in the Millinocket woods.  They feature varieties of wood oven pizza and various beers they make.

Orders are taken at the counter and customers pick up their food and drinks here.

The open hearth wood pizza oven cost $50,000 and was manufactured here in Maine.
It took three days to assemble once it arrived.

We placed our order at the counter and soon some delicious pizza was done. We enjoyed our food and had a great time catching up with Tony and his family.   Tony is an educator and loves teaching kids life skills.  He is also an instructor pilot.

Beautifully decorated facility.

We are very thankful to have the opportunity to travel around and reconnect with our military comrades, relatives and friends.

Later on this evening we headed up to Kirk and Pam Small's house on the lake and went our for a boat ride on their pontoon.  Lake Millinocket is crystal clear but very shallow in places.  There are huge rocks jutting out of the water and some islands, plus a great view of Mount Katahdin - very picturesque!  Some pictures:

Kirk took us on a cruise around the lake, but the wind started to come up so he pointed the bow back towards home.  As we passed one of the islands he spotted two bald eagles in the trees.  As we were watching them, they took off and each swooped down and grabbed a fish.  Then they landed on nearby rocks and feasted down.

We watched them for quite a while then headed back to their camp.  We were glad we brought sweatshirts as the temperatures continued to drop and the sun started down and the wind picked up.

We had a great time on the lake with Kirk and Pam.  Kirk pointed out some places he wanted to show us as we continued to explore in the next few days.  We finished up the ride and headed back to the campground.  That's it for today!
