As explained yesterday, we made the decision to depart Riverbend Campground a day early due to the serious power issues. So we pulled chocks there this morning at 0904 hrs and made our way over to Augusta ME then up I-95 to Millinocket ME and the Wilderness Edge Campground. This is stop #2 (#22) of 5 stops in Maine. It is a long ways up to #23 in Aroostook County where we used to live!
As we passed by the Bangor area we gave a call to retired First Sergeant Tony Campbell. I served in Iraq with Tony and have the utmost respect for him. Sounds like he is coming up to Millinocket on Sunday so we hope to see him then!
As we approached Millinocket we gave a shout out to our great friend Kirk Small and he met us just south of the campground. He was there checking out another questionable bridge for us that was supposedly 13 ft 7 in clearance - we are 13 ft 4-1/2 in tall, so not much gap! It looked like it was not going to be an issue, so I suspect it is actually taller than 13 ft 7 in. Anyway, we made it under, slowly, no issues!
We arrived at the campground at 1234 hrs and stopped at the office to check in. I had been talking with "Mary" about our reservations here. She is actually in Pennsylvania as she is the campground book keeper and manages all the reservations remotely. Anyway she was on the phone with the lady in the office when I walked in and she gave me a shout out! These folks are so friendly and helpful!
We understood that we had to go into a different camp site for one night and then move tomorrow, but they were able to get us into the site later today, so that was nice. We have outstanding power!! No issues what so ever, and that is a good thing as it is still a bit toasty here today.
Tomorrow we are going to drive to my Air Force buddy Kirk Small's house then head out from there. His place is on a lake with a picturesque view of Mount Katahdin in the distance, and just 11 miles from the Appalachian Trailhead - the very start of it! We understand from Kirk that dogs are not allowed in the park and no duallys, so he said he will drive us around,
