The Schellhase 2024 RV Adventures is underway. I had intended on posting an update this spring and we were overcome by events. Doreen had surgery in January and cancer was discovered and removed. More testing was done and they are confident they got is all, so she was released to travel this summer with follow-on "surveillance" when we get back this fall, and at six month intervals for two years then annually. Life will throw you curve balls sometimes when you least expect it, so that is why we go for the "gusto" while we are able.
On 6 March we got the RV out of storage and the following day we took it to the dealership for it's annual "physical". Since I have no room at my house to work on it I hire them to clean and grease the wheel bearings, inspect and grease the suspension bushings and wet bolts, and do a top to bottom inspection of the entire coach.
The following Friday 15 Mar I took the coach to the tire shop where I had a new set of tires installed. Those were the 2020 originals and they had over 25,000 miles on them plus this would have been season #5, so they were due. When it was done I took it to Griff's RV Park where we spent the next two weeks restocking it of the things we removed last fall, installing minor updates, etc.
The last few nights we actually moved into it and camped overnight so as to see what we had forgotten! We used the new electric furnace attachment I installed last fall and it performed flawlessly. Several nights were below freezing and we had no issues with the water pipes freezing. Liberty moved right in like she owned the place!
During this time I also installed a couple upgrades on the truck - a new Garmin GPS with an 8" screen, and a separate dash cam system. My old GPS had a built in dash cam but it decided to start having issues this winter, so we bought a new one.
So this morning at 0750 hrs we pulled chocks and headed southbound on I-35 towards Kansas City and then into Kansas to Lawrence, our first stop out of 42 this year. South of Des Moines I pulled into a truck stop and checked the torque on the RV lug nuts, since the wheels had been removed and the tires changed. This is a common maintenance practice for vehicles with aluminum wheels. I checked them again later today.
The remainder of the trip today was uneventful. We had overcast nearly the entire trip mixed with rain off and on from the Iowa border south. At 1227 hrs after 245 uneventful miles we rolled into the Kansas City West/Lawrence KOA. We were greeted with some nasty thunderstorms that moved through. We got some hail but nothing like Nebraska last year. I don't think the truck likely received and damage.
This stop is just an interim stop to break up the trip. We are here two nights and then we will move on the McConnell Air Force Base like we did last year. Tomorrow we need to refuel the truck and we may explore downtown Lawrence KS a bit.
That's it for tonight. Sorry this first post was a bit fragmented. We will get back in the swing of things!
