12 Apr 2024 - Arrived at Fort Sam Houston RV Park San Antonio TX

It does not seem possible, but we have already landed at stop #6 out of 42 on this years RV adventures, and one of our favorites - Fort Sam Houston RV Park in San Antonio TX.  We stayed here last year as well.

This morning we departed Dyess Air Force Base FamCamp at 0810 hrs with clear skies and headed southeast on mostly four lane roads but no interstate highways until right at the end.  As we moved into Texas Hill Country, the route today took us through several Texas towns such as Lawn, Novice, Coleman, Santa Anna, Brady and Mason.  The roadsides were decorated with beautiful wild flowers along the way!

Our travels today also took us through a destination for next time - Fredericksburg.  This is a thriving German village with shops and boutiques up and down the streets.  Fredericksburg was founded on May 8, 1846 by German immigrants under the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas.  The beautiful town shows the influence of it's German heritage and culture.  As their web site says, "You can see many iconic buildings, unique architectural elements, and historic sites all over the city. You can also find many traditional eateries, breweries, and bakeries to relish the authentic delicacies. The Nimitz Hotel is now home to the National Museum of the Pacific War, where you can see several displays and exhibits to understand the role of town during the World War II. The Pioneer Museum is an iconic site to understand the history, lifestyle, culture, and occupation of the early German settlers as depicted through photographs, artifacts, and structures. Today, the city is well known for its wineries, tourism, manufacturing sector, and locally owned businesses featuring a variety of goods, antiques, clothes, and traditional items."

We stopped a couple times in route and eventually ended up on I-10 then I-410 and our exit to Fort Sam Houston.  We arrived at the FamCamp at 1334 hrs after traveling 254 miles.  We checked in quickly and since we are here for seven nights we got the weekly rate saving us $30, basically 6 nights and the seventh night is free!  Most if not all the sites are full hookup pull through and they are paved and level with nice patios and picnic tables.  There is ample room for the towing vehicle at each site.  They have multiple laundry/shower facilities and several dumpsters for the trash.

Fort Sam Houston has an Base Exchange, Commissary and other amenities.  Not far from here is Lackland Air Force Base, "The Gateway to the Air Force" where all of us in recent history went through basic training.  Ah, the memories!!  Seems like yesterday!

Fort Sam, the army base, is named for the U.S. Senator from Texas, U.S. Representative from Tennessee, Tennessee and Texas governor, and first president of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston.  Fort Sam has several missions but it's home to the Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) headquarters, the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Center and School.  Right behind our campground is the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), the United States Army's premier medical institution.

So we have no specific plans or schedules here.  We have corresponded with a great friend and Iraq war military comrade, Command Sergeant Major (ret) Frank Leota who lives not far from here.  We had dinner last year with Frank and Vanessa.  We are looking forward to seeing them again while we are here.  We also want to visit Rebecca Creek Distillery, probably a trip down to the historic Market Square, and maybe a cruise on the River Walk just for old times!  We have yet to have our official 50th anniversary out-to-eat so maybe on the River Walk?!

We grilled some burgers for dinner and ate outside on the picnic table which was very welcome with the great temps.  Some relaxation is in the plan too!
