Overcast day here in San Antonio. I made several phone calls this morning nailing down a reservation at Scott Air Force Base and following up on one near Calais ME. I also successfully connected with a human on the phone and got registered in the Military Treatment Facility pharmacy system. I am now able to get medications issued while we are at active duty bases throughout the United States.
After my admin work, considering this is a Monday and also during the day we figured traffic would be lighter so we decided to head downtown to visit the Tower of the Americas and then the Historic Market Square.
The Tower of the Americas is a 750 ft tall observation tower opened in 1968 for the Hemisfair World's Fair. So this tower was only five years old when I was down here attending Air Force basic training! Needless to say I never noticed it! Construction of the tower began in 1966 and was completed in 18 months.
There are three passenger elevators that travel 800 feet per minute and take just 43 seconds to transport up to 1950 passengers per hour to the top.
We were the only passengers today on our ride ascending and descending! There is a rotating restaurant at the top as well as a bar and an observation deck. With it being so overcast the visibility was limited but it was still quite a spectacular view!
Around the inside of the observation deck are educational and historic displays about Texas and San Antonio.
After visiting the observation deck we traveled back to ground level and watch a 4D movie entitled "Skies Over Texas" that was included with our admission. It features a helicopter traveling over various parts of Texas showing the scenery (with 3D glasses on) plus seat motion and fog effects in the room!
Rather than eating atop the tower we decided to move on to the Historic Market Square also in downtown San Antonio. We try to come here each time we visit San Antonio. The whole area is full of shops and restaurants. You can buy everything from Mexican-themed decorations for your home to sombreros to vanilla!
We wrapped things up downtown and headed back to the base, which only took a few minutes. Tonight we watched the WNBA draft and watched Iowa's Caitlin Clark get selected #1 overall by the Indianapolis Fever. Later Iowa's Kate Martin was picked by Las Vegas Aces! So fun to see these talented athletes achieve their dreams.
Tomorrow morning we are headed to the Natural Bridge Cavern just north of San Antonio.
